The Eden Alternative is a pathway in developing person-centered care in long term care facilities, assisted living entities, group homes and other areas of heath care.

Specifically, Eden identifies three plagues that commonly befall elders or the disabled that become institutionalized and then narrates a series of 10 principles on how to combat these plagues and turn an institution into a home by way of elder-directed care and decision making. The pathway involves every facet of the facility and every employee. It involves the elders, their families and the community and creates a human habitat that makes life worth living for all those that inhabit the dwelling.
