2012 Symposium

WNYAPCC will host a region-wide symposium on May 2, 2012 at the Hearthstone Manor in Depew, NY. (http://www.hearthstonemanor.com). Please check back for the registration form, or email Diane Summers for more information.

The event will feature renowned health care leaders on culture change and person-centered care including:

Keynote: Marilyn Hartle, MSW, LCSW and LaDonna Jensen, R.N of "Jentle Harts" Participants will be guided through person-centered dementia care tactics and the importance of using these skills when caring for those suffering from dementia. Trained through the Bradford Dementia Group in England, they serve on the Dementia Care Mapping National Advisory Board. Jentle Harts is dedicated to enhancing the lives of frail and memory-impaired adults. http://jentleharts.com

Emi Kiyota, PhD Architecture
Specializing in person-centered architectural design and interior design methods, Emi has assisted organizations internationally and served as a consultant for the Green House Replication Project. She will guide participants through the importance of developing a “home” that takes on the characteristics of the people living and working there. Narrating on the importance of the hearts and minds of staff being the most important component of person-centered care, Emi will emphasize that facilities do not need to spend copious amounts of money to de-institutionalize their environment. Dr. Richard Taylor
A retired psychologist, Richard was diagnosed with Alzheimer's-type dementia in 2001. He is now a champion for individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Taylor is the author of the book "Alzheimer's from the Inside Out" and serves on the board of the Houston and Southeast Texas chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. He will share his journey and his passion for the importance of person-centered care especially as it relates to those with dementia. http://www.richardtaylorphd.com/

Judy Berry, CEO Lakeview Ranch Inc.
Judy developed a facility that focuses on meeting the emotional and spiritual needs of persons with dementia in addition to their physical needs. Lakeview Ranch Inc. opened in February 1999 in Darwin, MN, and provides a model of specialized dementia care for persons with dementia who are at high risk of repeated hospitalizations for the common challenging behavior(s) that can accompany most forms of the disease. http://www.lakeviewranch.com/
